GCSC .22 Pistol League FAQs
What type of shooting is this?
Our first priority is to provide shooters a learning experience that is fun-filled, not intimidating. The matches will be informal, beginning with .22 pistols and loosely adapting NRA .22 Precision Pistol Book rules. Range Officers will explain Range and safety rules, give a demonstration of how the shooting stations operate, explain the basics of the NRA Precision Pistol shooting and answer any questions. If and when shooters want to formally adopt NRA standards, GCSC will seek NRA sanctioning for the matches.
What are the dates of the matches?
The introductory Open House, Registration and first match will held May 1, 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Indoor Range. GCSC will furnish FREE hot dogs. Monthly matches are planned for first Wednesdays at 6:00 PM.
Will there be practices, perhaps weekly?
If groups (four or more shooters, if possible) wish to organize practice sessions, GCSC will schedule a Range Officer for the preferred date and time. (See also below.)
Is the Indoor Range open to the public for general shooting?
The Range will be open for public shooting on Sundays, 1:00 to 4:00 PM, beginning May 5. Indoor Range rules for weapons and calibers will apply. Our insurance rules require the presence of a GCSC Range Officer at the Indoor Range whenever shooting is in progress.
Can shooters join the league after the starting date?
Absolutely. Just show up at the Range for the regularly scheduled matches. Range Officers will help you get started.
Will all matches be held at the GCSC Indoor Pistol Range?
Yes. The Range features eight shooting stations, with distances out to 25 yards. The Range is lighted for night shooting, and the shooting positions are heated and/or air conditioned.
What are the general rules for the Range and matches?
The initial matches will be informal, loosely adapting the NRA model. Printed copies will be available. Safety is the one rule upon which there will be no compromise: Four basic commandments of shooting safety. “Cold range” (Weapons unloaded and cased or holstered. Magazines may be loaded in advance, but loaded weapons allowed only on firing line.) Unloaded gun handling (e.g., repairs, dry firing) allowed only in designated safe area. Eye and ear protection required.
Are these scored matches or just shooting sessions?
Match results will be explained, but at least initially, shooters should use their targets for learning and practice. Scored matches are the eventual goal.
What are the fees for the matches?
Each shooter’s First Match will be Free! Regular fees will be $5.00 per shooter for GCSC members, with a 10% discount for families. Non-members will pay $10 per shooter per match after the first three matches unless they become GCSC members. Fees include one NRA pistol target per shooter. Additional targets will be available at $1.00 each.
What pistols are allowed?
Generally, any safe, serviceable .22 caliber rimfire single- shot, semi-auto or revolver is allowed.
Do I need special ammo?
No. Any soft-tipped .22 LR is allowed as long as it works in your gun. No steel-jacketed, explosive, tracer or other specialty ammo is allowed.
What equipment and accessories do I need?
Hearing and vision protection are mandatory for all persons in the Range enclosure whenever shooting is in progress. Shooting muffs are best, but other approved earplugs are acceptable. Regular-wear glasses are acceptable, although many shooters opt for sports glasses. Shooting stations have benches, so no holster is required unless needed to transport your gun to and from the firing line.
Are there any age restrictions?
The minimum age for shooters is 12. However, youngsters vary by size, strength and experience, so exceptions may be granted on an individual basis. Any shooter under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. (Note also bench height, described below.)
Is the Range handicap accessible?
The current stations are equipped with U-shaped benches of about kitchen-counter height -- just over waist high for the average adult shooter. GCSC may be able to modify one of the stations to accommodate handicapped shooters. Please notify us if you will need assistance.
Will training/mentoring be available for new shooters?
Trained Range Officers who are also experienced shooters will be on duty for each match. Their primary duties will be administering the matches and ensuring safety, but they will help new shooters as time permits. New shooters will find it helpful to team up with an experienced shooter, or “mentor,” and/or to receive basic pistol training before engaging in the matches.
Are shooters allowed to form teams?
Yes. Teams of all types are encouraged, including experienced shooters, women-only teams, youth, etc. Rivalries are good!
